In 1916, Hamilton College stood on its hill above Clinton, New York, a village about 10 miles southeast of Utica, and the nation's attention was on the Mexican border. Pancho Villa's raid on Columbus, New Mexico, in March had led Washington to send troops after him, and the war in Europe was also on people's minds. Many of the young men on the Clinton hill were of military age, so preparedness and the possibility of American involvement were topics of conversation. The village kept to the rhythm of the academic year, with faculty, shopkeepers, and church congregations sharing the same few streets. That fall, Woodrow Wilson's campaign for reelection, built on the claim that he had kept the country out of war, drew political interest across the Mohawk Valley.
