Kingston, New York, sat on the Hudson River in 1916 as a city whose economy rested on brickmaking, cement, bluestone quarrying, and the shipping of goods by river barge and by the Ulster and Delaware Railroad. The Hudson's Rondout Creek harbor, where the old Kingston Point and Rondout district met the river, handled coal, lumber, and cargo, and the cement works along the waterfront were among the largest in the state. The city had been the first capital of New York State in 1777, a fact local residents of the period took pride in, and its older streets above the river were lined with Dutch-era stone houses beside newer Victorian homes. Much of what the picture shows, the roofs, church spires, and waterfront, reflects a town at a busy industrial peak just before the United States entered the First World War.
