In 1916, Buffalo's Albright Art Gallery stood on the grounds of Delaware Park, a landscape shaped by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, and this view shows the park as local residents knew it. On summer afternoons, families drove and strolled its ponds and parkways, which made the grounds a favorite place for the city's middle class. Buffalo's name also traveled through its automobile trade, since the Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Company, a maker of expensive touring cars, operated its plants in the city. Within a year, the United States would enter the First World War in April 1917, and the factories that built luxury automobiles would soon turn to military production.
