In 1896 Buffalo was a lake port and industrial city of roughly a quarter million people, and that autumn it became a showcase for a new kind of power. In November, electricity generated at Niagara Falls, about 20 miles north, reached the city over transmission lines, and residents were learning to read the news of a technology that would soon light streets and run factories far from the river. The waterfront still carried the lake and canal commerce that had made Buffalo prosperous, while the city's growing business district and residential avenues along Delaware and Elmwood showed how fast it was expanding. Local people in 1896 would have known Buffalo as a city poised between its old harbor trade and the electric age.
