Buffalo, New York, in 1909 was one of the busiest freight ports on the Great Lakes, where the Erie Canal's traffic met lake steamers and freighters along the city's harbor. Grain elevators, coal piers, and ore boats carrying iron from Lake Superior kept the waterfront working around the clock. Steel had grown up nearby, with the Lackawanna plant south of the city already in operation, and rail lines converged on the docks from every direction. Residents still remembered the Pan-American Exposition of 1901, which brought the city national attention until President McKinley was shot there that September.
