Buffalo, New York, in 1909 was one of the country's great lake-and-canal ports, where grain elevators, rail yards, and steel and manufacturing plants lined the Buffalo River and the Lake Erie shore. The city had grown to roughly 380,000 people, and it drew cheap power from Niagara Falls, about 20 miles north, which fed its factories and streetcars. Buffalo had also hosted the Pan-American Exposition in 1901, when President William McKinley was shot there, an event many residents still remembered in 1909. The telephone company named in this title belonged to a crowded field of services, since by then the city had several competing exchanges and the switchboard was becoming a daily fixture of downtown business. Residents would have known Buffalo first as a place of commerce and work, and this view shows the city's business life at that moment.
