Troy, New York, sat on the east bank of the Hudson River in 1909, and its waterfront was the working edge of a city built on iron, collars, and river trade. Troy had long been famous for its collar and cuff laundries, a industry so large that the city was often called the "Collar City," and its iron works, stove foundries, and bell makers shipped goods along the Hudson and over the Erie Canal. Rail lines ran close to the river, carrying coal, freight, and passengers between the riverfront wharves and the factories up the hill. In 1909 the city was still growing, with a population near 76,000, and its residents would have recognized the waterfront as the place where their livelihoods were loaded, unloaded, and tied to the wider world.
