In 1909 the Chautauqua Institution on the shore of Chautauqua Lake in southwestern New York was more than three decades old. It had begun in 1874 as a summer training program for Sunday school teachers, and by then its model of lectures, classes, and music had spread across the country through the traveling Chautauqua circuit. This waterfront was the working edge of the community, where steamers and small boats carried summer visitors between the grounds and nearby lakeside landings. Life on the grounds followed firm rules of conduct, including Sabbath observance and a prohibition on alcohol, which reflected the moral outlook of its founders. Residents of Chautauqua County and the many families who spent their summers there knew the place as a gathering point for educators, ministers, and students.
