In 1909 Manlius, a village a short distance east of Syracuse in Onondaga County, was closely tied to St. John's Military Academy, a boarding school for boys founded in 1869 under Episcopal sponsorship. Syracuse, a major railroad and canal city, was the nearest large market, and families from the region often sent sons to Manlius for schooling built around drill, discipline, and college preparation. Cadets in uniform and the academy's grounds reflected a wider movement in American education, which grew after the Spanish-American War, to teach military drill as character training. For village residents, the academy gave the community its public identity, and its parades and ceremonies drew visitors from Syracuse and nearby towns.
