Newburgh, New York, sat on the west bank of the Hudson River in Orange County in 1909, and its waterfront was the town's working edge. River traffic carried coal, lumber, brick, and farm goods, and passenger steamers on the Hudson River Day Line stopped at the city on the run between New York and Albany. Newburgh was proud of its past as the place where George Washington headquartered the Continental Army in 1782 and 1783, and visitors could still see the Hasbrouck House he used. Factories and docks along the river gave employment to many local families, and the water's edge was where people of the city came to watch boats, load cargo, and meet travelers.
