Buffalo in 1925 was one of the busiest industrial and shipping cities in the country, sitting at the eastern end of the Great Lakes and the northern terminus of the Erie Canal system. Its harbor handled grain elevators, iron ore, coal, and lumber, and the city's steel mills, grain milling plants, and rail yards drew workers from across Western New York and from Europe. The Buffalo Harbor waterfront was central to that trade, with lake freighters and canal boats moving cargo between the Midwest and the Atlantic seaboard. Residents of the period knew the city as a grain and steel center, and its population had grown past 500,000 by the mid-1920s.
