Plattsburgh, New York, on the western shore of Lake Champlain, was in the summer of 1916 host to one of the first large civilian military training camps in the country. Business and professional men from across the nation came to the Plattsburgh Barracks area to drill, march, and learn basic soldiering, part of a preparedness movement that gained force as the United States watched the war in Europe. The town had long lived by its lake trade, its rail connections, and the memory of the 1814 battle that turned back a British invasion. In this photograph, the 6th Training Regiment appears as a grouped body of trainees, a reminder that the local streets and fields were, for one season, filled with men preparing for a war the country had not yet entered.
