In August 1915, Plattsburgh, a lakeside city of about 10,000 on the western shore of Lake Champlain, hosted one of the first civilian military training camps in the United States. Businessmen and professionals, many of them paying their own way, spent a few weeks drilling, marching, and learning basic army discipline under regular officers. The camp grew out of a national debate over preparedness that intensified after the war in Europe began in 1914, and it drew attention from across the country. Local residents would have known the town for its 1814 battle, when American forces turned back a British invasion on land and Lake Champlain, and in 1915 they watched a new kind of visitor fill the streets and fields. The photograph records a tidy encampment of tents and uniformed men, a snapshot of a moment when civilian life and military preparation briefly shared the same ground.
