Camp Mondawmin on Schroon Lake, in Essex County, New York, was one of the many summer camps that filled the lake shores of the Adirondacks in 1920. The region had been shaped by the logging, tanning and hotel trades of the late 1800s, and by 1920 many of its lakeside properties had turned to seasonal use by families and youth groups from New York City and other cities. The Adirondack Park, created by the state in 1892, meant much of the surrounding land was held as forest, which made the lake a draw for those seeking clean air and open water. The year came just after the First World War and at the start of national Prohibition, when summer outings in the country were a common escape from crowded city life. The camp's ordered rows of buildings and cleared shoreline reflect that growing taste for organized outdoor recreation.
