Lake Mohonk, in the Shawangunk Mountains of Ulster County, New York, was a summer resort in 1915, built around the Mohonk Mountain House hotel that the Smiley family, Quakers from Albany, had opened decades earlier. The Smileys hosted an annual Lake Mohonk Conference on International Arbitration there, and the 1915 gathering met while Europe had been at war since the summer of 1914. Delegates debated how disputes between nations might be settled without fighting, and the mood was grim that spring, with the Lusitania sinking off Ireland in May. Hudson Valley visitors and the wider public knew Mohonk as a retreat for lectures, lake walks, and genteel summer society, and in this panoramic view the hotel and its grounds appear as they were for those guests.
