Sheepshead Bay, on the southern edge of Brooklyn, had been a fishing harbor and seaside resort for decades by 1915, with hotels, clam houses, and boatyards drawing visitors by rail and trolley from Manhattan and across the borough. Brooklyn had been part of New York City since 1898, and the shoreline still depended largely on the water for its livelihood. In 1915 the Sheepshead Bay Speedway, a large banked oval built for automobile racing, opened in the district and brought crowds of spectators and wealthy motorists to a place better known for seafood and summer excursions. The track gave the bay area a new kind of attraction just as the automobile was becoming common among city residents, drawing sporting crowds from across the metropolitan region.
