Looking across the water toward the buildings, this panoramic view captures the full sweep of a working harbor and the skyline rising behind it. Panoramic photographs like this one were especially popular in the early twentieth century, when new cameras and wide-format prints let photographers record the rapid growth of American cities in a single frame. The harbor in the foreground was once the busiest port in the country, with ferries, freight barges and ocean liners moving constantly between the docks and the open bay. Wide views such as this one are worth studying closely, since the small figures on the piers and the boats on the water show how much daily life depended on the waterfront.
