Sheepshead Bay, on the southern edge of Brooklyn, was a fishing harbor and summer resort that had become part of New York City when the five boroughs were consolidated in 1898. In 1915 the Sheepshead Bay Speedway opened there as a banked board oval of about two miles, built for automobile and motorcycle racing at a time when the automobile was turning into a mass pastime. Brooklyn held more than a million residents, and the nearby beaches, hotels, and rail lines drew crowds from across the city to the bay. Local families who had known the district for its boats and seafood now found it a destination for speed contests, and the track quickly became one of the best-known racing venues in the New York area.
