Binghamton, New York, sat where the Chenango River meets the Susquehanna, and in 1917 it was a manufacturing city of factories, rail lines, and shoe and cigar workshops. Its population had grown steadily in the decades before, and its residents were proud enough of their town to call it the "Parlor City," a nickname tied to its furniture and parlor-stove trade. That spring, the United States entered the First World War, and local men who had joined the state militia were soon called into federal service. The Guard companies from Binghamton drilled through the summer and fall before leaving for training camps, and this photograph captures the local unit at a moment when war had turned a hometown militia into a departure point for France.
