In 1917, Nebraska's National Guard was being drawn into the national mobilization as the United States prepared to enter the First World War that April. The state's economy rested on farming, cattle and hog raising, and grain shipped by rail, with Omaha serving as a major railroad and meatpacking center and Lincoln as the seat of state government and the University of Nebraska. Many Nebraska men who had served on the Mexican border in 1916 were still in uniform, and towns across the state held send-off gatherings as companies left for training camps. Neighbors read the local papers closely for word of which units would go and when. This photograph records a Guard formation at a moment when a peacetime militia was becoming a wartime force.
