Austin, Minnesota, in Mower County near the Iowa border, was a meatpacking town in 1917, and the George A. Hormel & Company plant there was among its largest employers. The Cedar River runs through the town, and its businesses and farms drew trade from the surrounding county. When the United States entered the First World War in April 1917, local men joined the National Guard and drilled in the summer months, and a guard company posed for this panoramic photograph as the town watched its young men prepare for service overseas. Residents of that year would have known Austin as a packing center with a strong local identity, and the war soon pulled both its workers and its civic life into the national effort.
