In 1917 Nebraska was a state of county seats and railroad towns, and its National Guard companies were drawn from local armories rather than from one city. Voters had approved statewide prohibition in 1916, and the saloon trade was due to end in May 1917, a change that unsettled many towns where taverns and their suppliers had long provided jobs. In the western valleys, irrigated fields were turning increasingly to sugar beets for processing plants, while Fort Crook, a federal post near Bellevue south of Omaha, gave Guard units a place to train beside regular soldiers. For many families the Guard was already a familiar part of town life, with its drills and parades, but that year a company's roll call began to carry a national meaning.
