Nebraska in 1917 was a state of wheat and corn farms, railroad towns, and grain elevators, with Omaha's stockyards and packing plants handling livestock from across the plains. The United States entered the First World War that April, and the state's National Guard was called into federal service, sending local companies from their armories into summer training. The Fourth Nebraska Infantry pictured here was one of those units, and in small towns the departure of neighbors in olive drab was the most personal sign of the war. Farmers were urged to produce more grain for export, and communities held Liberty Loan rallies and send-off parades. Families at home waited for letters from training camps and, later, from France.
