Nebraska in 1917 was a state of wheat, corn, and cattle, with railroads carrying its produce east and its towns growing around grain elevators and depots. When the United States entered the First World War that April, the National Guard units that drilled in armories across the state were called into federal service, and young men who had known little beyond farm work and small-town life suddenly faced months of training and the prospect of Europe. This photograph of the Sixth Nebraska Infantry captures a regiment at that turning point, its members lined up as neighbors and hometown boys who would soon be measured against a much larger war. Such units were often recruited from the same counties and churches, so families across Nebraska followed their departures closely. The image records a moment when a Nebraska community was sending its own sons into a conflict far beyond the plains.
