South Omaha in 1914 was a separate city across the Missouri-fed bluffs from downtown Omaha, built around the Union Stock Yards and the packing plants that processed hogs and cattle shipped in by rail. The Omaha Packing Company, Armour, and Swift were among the major firms whose work drew thousands of immigrant laborers, many from Czech, Polish, and Eastern European communities who settled in neighborhoods close to the yards. The city had been annexed into Omaha only in 1915, so in 1914 its residents still voted, paid taxes, and held civic life apart from the larger city to the north. The Bee Publishing Company, the Omaha newspaper that produced this view, was a fixture of local news and promotion, and a panoramic scene of South Omaha would have shown a town defined by packing houses, rail lines, and working-class streets.
