Omaha High School, photographed in 1914, stood in a city of more than 120,000 people that had grown up around the Missouri River and the railroads. Union Pacific's presence made Omaha a rail hub, and the stockyards and packing plants in South Omaha drew workers and capital from across the region. A public high school in that setting served a growing middle class of clerks, merchants, and railroad families, many of whose children were the first in their households to attend secondary school. Local people knew the school as a point of civic pride and a place where the city's young people gathered for sports, debates, and graduations. The panoramic view captures a building and a student body that reflected a city confident in its industry and its schools.
