Omaha, Nebraska, in 1908 was a river city of about 120,000 people whose fortunes rested on railroads, meatpacking, and wholesale trade. The Union Pacific maintained its headquarters and shops there, while the stockyards and packing houses of South Omaha, not yet joined to the city until 1915, shipped beef across the country. Goods had to be moved between depots, warehouses, and the riverfront, and that work fell to hauling firms like the Merchants Transfer Company, whose wagons and teams carried crates, bales, and household goods through streets still dominated by horses. Many residents would also have remembered the 1898 Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition, which had brought national attention to the city.
