Scribner, Nebraska, in 1908 was a small farm town in Dodge County, built along the railroad and the Elkhorn River valley. Its economy rested on the surrounding grain and livestock farms, and the grain elevators and loading yards by the tracks were where local wheat, corn, and hogs were shipped out to larger markets. Many residents were of German descent, and a number of families had arrived in the region by way of German settlements in Russia, bringing with them the churches, German-language schooling, and close-knit community life that shaped the town's social calendar. In 1908 the town's people would have known Scribner chiefly as a stop on the rail line and a market center for the farms around it, where Saturday trade, church gatherings, and county news kept the community tied together.
