Beatrice, the seat of Gage County in southeast Nebraska, was a busy farm-trade town in 1908, shaped by the Burlington railroad line that ran through it and by the grain, livestock, and farm implements that moved in and out of its depot. The town had grown up around the Blue River and had a substantial business district of brick storefronts, banks, and hotels, serving a surrounding countryside of wheat, corn, and hog raising. Fifth and Court Streets sat near the commercial heart, where Saturday traffic of wagons, buggies, and early automobiles mixed with pedestrians heading to shops and church services. Local residents in 1908 knew the town as a regional market center and as the home of the Beatrice Creamery, a company whose products were widely sold across the Midwest.
