Lincoln, Nebraska, was a capital city of about 40,000 people in 1908, serving as the seat of state government and home to the University of Nebraska. Railroad work anchored its economy, with the Burlington's shops and freight yards drawing workers and supporting a steady flow of trade through the city. William Jennings Bryan, who lived in Lincoln and published his weekly newspaper, The Commoner, from there, had been the Democratic presidential nominee in 1896, 1900, and again in 1908, so the city was closely tied to national politics that year. At the downtown corner of 11th and O, a shopper or passerby in 1908 would have known it as the commercial heart of a growing prairie capital.
