Alliance, Nebraska, in 1908 was a young town in Box Butte County on the northwest edge of the state's panhandle, and it took its name from the Farmers' Alliance, the farm reform movement that had shaped local politics in the 1890s. Homesteaders were still arriving under the Kinkaid Act of 1904, which offered 640 acres in western Nebraska, and their concerns kept agrarian politics alive in the county. Residents followed that fall's presidential race closely, since William Jennings Bryan, the Nebraska Democrat who had carried his party's banner in 1896, was seeking the White House for a third time. Many families would have known the town less for its buildings than for its wind, its dry summers, and the long haul to market that a homestead depended on.
