Falls City, the seat of Richardson County in southeast Nebraska, was a farm trade town in 1908, close to the Kansas line and the Missouri River country to the east. Its economy rested on the surrounding corn, wheat, hog, and cattle farms, which sent produce and livestock through local shipping points and along the rail lines that connected the town to larger markets. Stores, grain elevators, and small manufacturers lined the streets near the courthouse, which anchored civic life in a county where farm families came to town for business, church, and county affairs. Residents of the period knew Falls City mainly as a steady agricultural center, a place where the rhythm of planting and harvest shaped the calendar of commerce and social life. The panorama records a town that was still growing with the surrounding farmland rather than one defined by any single factory or industry.
