Nebraska City, Nebraska, in 1908 was a river town of a few thousand people on the Missouri, grown from its 1850s start as a steamboat landing and outfitting point for overland emigrants. Farming and the handling of grain, livestock and fruit shaped its economy, and the railroad lines serving the town made it a market center for Otoe County. Residents knew it as the birthplace of Arbor Day, proposed by J. Sterling Morton, a newspaper editor who later served as Secretary of Agriculture and who urged tree planting here in 1872. Orchards, shaded streets and the Morton estate at Arbor Lodge gave the town a green reputation that its people took pride in as the first decade of the new century drew to a close.
