Sixth and Court Streets in Beatrice, Nebraska, show the county seat of Gage County in 1908, a town of several thousand people on the Big Blue River in the state's southeast. Its economy rested on farm trade and manufacturing, most visibly the Dempster windmills and water systems built by the Dempster Mill Manufacturing Company, which sold equipment across the Great Plains. Railroad lines, including the Burlington, tied Beatrice to grain markets and to Lincoln, about thirty miles northwest. In 1908, the year of William Jennings Bryan's third run for president, residents would have followed the campaign closely, since Bryan lived in nearby Lincoln and the Democratic Party drew strong support from Nebraska farmers.
