South Omaha in 1908 was a packing and livestock town built around the Union Stock Yards, which had opened in 1884 on land along the Missouri River flats south of Omaha proper. Cattle, hogs and sheep arrived by rail from the Plains and were sold, held in pens and shipped east or sent to the meatpacking houses that lined the district, making the yards one of the largest livestock markets in the country. South Omaha had been an independent city until it was annexed to Omaha in 1915, and in 1908 its residents were largely immigrant workers, many of them Bohemian, Irish and Eastern European, who labored in the packing plants and rail yards. The panorama captures that crowded industrial landscape at the height of its activity.
