Omaha in 1916 was a Missouri River city of roughly 190,000 people, though that count reflects the 1920 census and the city was smaller at the time. The year was shaped by a national debate over military readiness. After Pancho Villa's raid into New Mexico in March, National Guard units from many states, Nebraska's among them, were called to the Mexican border, and the Army's post at Fort Omaha on the city's northern edge became a point of local attention. Downtown, streetcars still carried clerks and laborers along Farnam and Douglas streets, and the city's merchants and rail men watched closely as the war in Europe kept prices for grain and meat high.
