Omaha in 1914 was a Missouri River city whose downtown office buildings, wholesale houses, and rail yards were crowded with commerce. That summer, the war that broke out in Europe in August raised demand for American meat and grain, and local firms that shipped those goods by rail felt the change quickly. Woodmen of the World, a fraternal insurance society headquartered in Omaha, drew members and agents from across the Midwest to its offices, and streetcar lines carried clerks and laborers between downtown and the growing residential neighborhoods on the city's edges. Residents would have known Omaha as an insurance and wholesale center with a booming economy and a reputation for hosting out-of-town visitors.
