In 1916, South Omaha's economy leaned heavily on livestock, and wartime demand in Europe kept packinghouse orders strong and wages steady for many families on the city's bluff-side streets. Hog and cattle receipts at the yards ran high that year, and freight trains moved in and out of the town day and night. Residents who had watched the meatpacking trade grow for decades knew South Omaha as a place of workers' cottages, corner saloons, and parish churches where services were held in several languages. The 1916 presidential campaign reached the neighborhood through rallies, newspaper coverage, and party clubs, as it did across Nebraska. Daily life was shaped by long shifts, rising prices, and the constant noise and smell of the yards.
