Omaha, Nebraska, in 1914 was a railroad and livestock city on the Missouri River. The Union Pacific maintained major offices and shops there, and the stockyards and packing plants of South Omaha handled cattle and hogs shipped in from across the Plains. Wholesale houses and grain firms gave the downtown a commercial character, and residents still pointed to the 1898 Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition as proof that their city could compete with larger eastern centers. Many also knew Omaha for Ak-Sar-Ben, the civic and social organization whose annual coronation balls drew prominent local families.
