Lincoln in 1915 was a city of wholesale houses, cream and produce dealers, and small manufacturers, many of them serving farm families across southeastern Nebraska. The state legislature met in the capitol during the odd-numbered year of 1915, so lawmakers, lobbyists, and clerks filled the downtown hotels and cafes for months at a stretch. Lincoln's churches, many of them Lutheran congregations founded by German and Swedish immigrants, held services in Swedish and German for older members while their children attended English-language public schools. Summer evenings brought families to the city's parks and band concerts, and residents of the young city mostly thought of themselves as citizens of a growing government and farm center.
