Lincoln in 1915 was a city of roughly 43,000 people, and its growth still depended on the state government, the University of Nebraska, and the railroads that moved grain and livestock out of the surrounding farm country. Streetcars run by the Lincoln Traction Company carried residents between the downtown business blocks and the growing residential neighborhoods on the edges of town. The Nebraska State Fair, held in the city, drew farm families and exhibitors from across the state each autumn. Many residents were following the war in Europe closely through newspapers, even as the United States stayed out of the fighting, and the local papers gave considerable space to agricultural prices and crop reports.
