Lexington, the seat of Dawson County in south-central Nebraska, sat on the Platte River valley in 1909 and was a shipping and farming town built around the Union Pacific line. Its economy rested on grain, livestock, and the sale of corn and alfalfa from the surrounding Platte bottomlands, with the railroad carrying cattle and produce to Omaha and Kansas City markets. The town had grown steadily since the 1880s as settlers broke the prairie and irrigation ditches began to appear along the river. Main Street merchants, churches, and the county courthouse anchored civic life, while the Dawson County fair and Fourth of July gatherings drew families in from the farms.
