Fort Robinson, in Dawes County in northwestern Nebraska, was a working cavalry post in 1909, when the 8th U.S. Cavalry was stationed there. The fort had been founded in the 1870s to keep watch over the nearby Pine Ridge and Red Cloud agencies, and by the early 1900s its days as a frontier outpost were over, though it still drew its life from the surrounding region. Ranching and open-range cattle dominated the country around it, and the railroad town of Crawford, a few miles away, handled much of the local trade in livestock, supplies, and mail. Soldiers, officers' families, and civilian employees made up a small community whose calendar followed drills, inspections, and the seasonal care of horses. A photograph like this one would have been understood by those who lived there as a record of the post itself, its men, and its place on the Nebraska plains.
