Hastings, Nebraska, in 1909 was a railroad and farm-trade town on the Burlington line of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, which had laid out the town in the early 1870s and named it for one of its officials. As the seat of Adams County, it drew wheat, corn, and livestock from the surrounding prairie to its grain elevators and rail yards, and the Burlington's shops and division offices gave it a steady payroll. Hastings College, founded by Presbyterians in the 1880s, lent the town a sense of schooling and church life that many residents took pride in. This photograph shows the town as its residents knew it: a Plains community whose fortunes rose and fell with the price of grain and the timetables of the railroad.
