Fairbury, the seat of Jefferson County in southeast Nebraska, was a farm-service town in 1909, with its economy tied to the corn, wheat, and livestock raised on the surrounding prairie. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad ran through the town, so grain elevators, stock yards, and freight sidings gave local farmers a way to sell their harvests and bring in goods. Like many Nebraska communities of the period, Fairbury drew settlers during the decade's farm boom, and its churches, schools, and lodges were central to social life. Residents of the time knew the town mainly as a trading center where county business, Saturday markets, and rail traffic came together. This 1909 panorama records that mix of commerce and daily life at the moment when small Nebraska towns were at their most active.
