Kearney, Nebraska, in 1909 was a Buffalo County railroad town of several thousand people, shaped by the Union Pacific and Burlington tracks along the Platte valley and by the farms spreading across the surrounding prairie. Its name came from Fort Kearny, the army post that had guarded the Oregon Trail upriver decades earlier. By then the town's most talked-about institution was the state normal school, a teacher-training college the legislature had established in Kearney only a few years before, which drew students from across the state and kept local boarding houses and shops busy. Grain, livestock and farm produce moved through the depots every week, and churches, lodges and Saturday trade downtown gave residents much of their social life.
