North Platte, Nebraska, in 1909 was a railroad town built around the Union Pacific line, which ran through the city along the North Platte River. Its rail yards, shops, and division offices gave work to many local families, and the town served as the county seat of Lincoln County and a shipping point for the surrounding cattle and grain country. Residents in those years knew the place as a stopping point on the transcontinental route and as the home of William F. Cody, Buffalo Bill, whose Scout's Rest ranch lay just outside town. The panorama shows a community whose growth depended on trains moving through it day and night.
