Crawford, Nebraska, in 1909 was a small railroad town in the northwestern corner of the state, in Dawes County's open grass country. It grew up after the Chicago and North Western line reached the area in the mid-1880s, and it took its name from Captain Emmet Crawford, an army officer tied to nearby Fort Robinson who was killed in Mexico in 1886. Cattle ranching and the rail shipment of livestock supported local business, while homesteads spread across the surrounding land. Fort Robinson lay a short distance away, and the Pine Ridge country of the Oglala Lakota lay to the north. Most residents knew Crawford as a depot stop and a market town for the ranches around it.
