Fremont, Nebraska, in 1908 was the county seat of Dodge County and a railroad town on the Platte River, about 45 miles northwest of Omaha. Its economy rested on the surrounding farms, where corn, hogs, and cattle moved through the town's grain elevators and stock yards on the Union Pacific and Chicago and North Western lines. Fremont also had a normal school that trained teachers for rural schools across the state, so educators and farm families were a visible part of its streets. Many residents traced their roots to Danish, German, and Swedish immigrants who had settled the valley in the decades after the railroads arrived. Local people in 1908 would have known Fremont as a steady market and college town, a place where the trains, the courthouse, and the fairgrounds set the rhythm of the week.
