Blair, the seat of Washington County in eastern Nebraska, was in 1908 a small railroad and farm town that had grown up after John I. Blair's railroad company laid its line through the area in the late 1860s. Its economy rested on the surrounding farms, where corn, oats, wheat, and hogs and cattle went out by rail to markets in Omaha, Sioux City, and Chicago. Grain elevators, lumber and coal yards, and the stores serving farm families along the main streets gave the town its daily rhythm. Residents of Blair in 1908 would have known it mainly as a county center, a place for court days, church gatherings, and the trading that drew farmers in from the surrounding countryside.
